The talk of the European business press this weekend is of a rumored acquisition by Murdoch-owned satellite TV company BSkyB of UK-based broadband provider EasyNet. BSkyB’s purported goal in the purchase of EasyNet is to gain access to broadband Internet customers for web-based transmissions of its video content services.
BSkyB raised about £1 billion in a bond offering last week, with the stated purpose of part of the proceeds to engage in acquisitions. If Murdoch’s News Corp. feels that it needs a terrestrial broadband distribution outlet in the UK, where BSkyB is a powerful provider of multichannel and interactive TV video offerings, is it possible that News Corp. might be looking around for a broadband outlet of its own in the U.S. where Murdoch-controlled DBS provider DirecTV is less of a competitive force than BSkyB is in Britain?
