Wall Street Journal tech guru Walt Mossberg has an interesting column in tomorrow’s (12/29) edition. Mossberg, who translates technology for the average user, rails against the computer industry for its almost exclusive focus on big corporations to the detriment of consumers or small businesses. But one company he spares is Apple Computer, which has excelled at reaching the mass market with new technologies — admittedly in part because businesses have spurned Apple.
Still, Apple’s focus on delivering useful technology to the typical consumer has paid off, as has its focus on excellent customer service (to which I can attest, given that I waited until December 22 to buy an iPod. Apple delivered the device on December 23 for a relatively modest overnight shipping fee).
Some of you wonder why reviewers like me, writing for the non-IT part of the world, have consistently praised Apple products in recent years. One reason is that they are good. Another is that they have been unaffected (so far) by the plague of viruses and spyware that makes Windows users miserable. But an underlying reason is the focus on individual users.
