Cable CTOs: We Could Do Place-Shifting

placeshifting.jpg(Atlanta, GA) A group of cable CTOs gathered here at the NCTA show to talk about what’s hot and what’s next on the tech front. While the well-versed bunch of cable tech veterans had a lot of interesting things to say, their views on SlingMedia’s place-shifting Slingbox were new additions to the repertoires.

Bottom-line: cable’s chief engineers think they can replicate what Sling has done.

“We like the Sling service and we’re jealous and we’re a little bit surprised that place-shifting is legal,” Comcast EVP and CTO Dave Fellos said.

“We haven’t done it, not that we can’t,” Time Warner Cable CTO Mike LaJoie said. “The notion of Sling isn’t anything new. It’s a question of licensing and we’re looking into it.”

Chris Bowick, CTO of Cox, said there are issues when it comes to launching a Sling-like service on a wide-scale. “We all face the dilemma of how does Sling scale,” he said. “Taking that concept and providing it in a networked-based capability could be pretty interesting.”
