VoIP Market Heats Up

voip.jpgVoIP keeps getting hotter and hotter, surprisingly so because it’s a pretty well-established technology by now. First, Om has two excellent round-ups of two flurries in the VoIP market. One area of activity is around mobile VoIP search, sparked by Google’s filing yesterday for a mobile VoIP search patent. The second is a mini-wave of VoIP merger mania typified by Skype’s purchase of Sonorit Holdings for $27 million.

This rise in VoIP tech development and acquisition activity goes along with growing awareness of VoIP among U.S. and U.K. consumers. According to a recent Harris Interactive survey, the percentage of U.S. consumers who are aware of VoIP is 51%, up from 36% nine months ago. In the U.K., the percentage of consumers aware of VoIP is 46%, up from 37% nine months ago.
