Sacramento Wi-Fi Founders as Vendor Pulls Out

munibroadband.jpgOne high-profile municipal Wi-Fi project is in jeopardy today after its technology vendor, MobilePro (based near me in Bethesda, MD) pulled out of the project. It seems that after granting the project to MobilePro, and following a fanfare launch in April, Sacramento decided to change the terms of the contract.

Sacramento wants MobilePro to offer some level of free service, to be supported by ad revenues, without the benefit of the city itself being the anchor tenant. MobilePro, however, doesn’t think an ad-supported Wi-Fi network will make it.

“Based upon MobilePro’s research and experience as one of the leading Wi-Fi broadband wireless network service providers to municipalities in North America, MobilePro does not believe that an advertising-supported business case is financially sustainable,” said the firm’s president and chief operating officer Jerry Sullivan in a statement.
