CNET’s News.com has done an excellent job lately of documenting the rise of municipal broadband, starting with the most recent piece on the Senate Commerce Committee’s approval yesterday of its telecom reform legislation, which contains a provision that bars states from hindering municipally delivered broadband services.
Other noteworthy muni-broadband developments this week:
—The city of Baltimore is pursuing a Wi-Fi plan that is “inclusive.” First, the city is asking communications companies to provide their input in the design of the network. Secondly, Baltimore’s Connected Communities, Connected City initiative requires new developments to built with high-speed Internet infrastructure and calls for the subsidized provision of computers to low-income residents.
—EarthLink launched its first city-wide Wi-Fi network in Anaheim, CA, purportedly the largest municipal broadband build in the U.S.
Check out CNET’s two-part piece (here and here) on how the muni-broadband effort has fared in Tempe, AZ.
