IP Democracy: It's Alive! Two New Blogs Created Every Second
Technorati’s Dave Sifry has posted his quarterly analysis of the blogosphere and, as usual, he documents a growing, vibrant blogosphere. Sifry has unearthed so many illuminating facts and I won’t go over all of them here.
Just a couple of highlights:
- On July 31st, Technorati tracked its 50 millionth blog. Although the growth of the blogosphere is slowing down, 175,000 web logs are created each day, or more than two blogs are created every second of every day. To be sure, some of these are the dreaded "splogs" — Sifry says about 8% of the blogs that make it past Technorati’s filters are splogs. Technorati doesn’t let these spam-mongers live in the index for long, though.
- Posting volume is strong. Technorati tracks about 1.6 Million postings per day, or about 18.6 posts per second, double the volume of about a year ago.
- Blogs continue to infiltrate the top news sources. Of the top 90 media web sites, eleven, or 12.2%, are blogs. Sifry has a hard-to-read chart listing these blogs, but among them are Boing Boing, Engadget and Daily Kos. An easier to read chart listing only the top 30 is reproduced below. (Wish Sifry wouldn’t use red and blue colors to signify mainstream media versus blogs because of their political connotations.)
