Courtesy of techPresident, the Editors Weblog reports that The New York Times and The New York Sun are both launching new political web sites, with initial coverage devoted to the 2008 presidential campaign. In a memo to news room staffers, NYT Executive Editor Bill Keller wrote that “The migration of politics and political journalism to the web isn’t quite new, but it sure is moving fast. We’re moving too.”
In a very interesting aside, the Editors Weblog notes that for the first time, a central political desk will supervise both print and web coverage, giving each platform equal weight. The newspaper of record is apparently coming around to the idea that the Internet is just as important as the print medium.
The New York Sun’s site, called NYSunPolitics.com, will launch in March.
Both papers are clearly chasing the trend established by RealClearPolitics and Allbritton’s The Politico, which today has a very amusing new tagline:
…An Anna Nicole Free News Zone*
*Unless the father turns out to be a politician
Of course, all of these sites are chasing the big political blogs. It’s fair to say that no member of the electorate will ever again have an excuse (if ever one existed) for staying uninformed.
